Growing Green Hearts: Students helping nature thrive!

This year, Restore Hibiscus and Bays has been buzzing with energy thanks to the amazing efforts of our youngest eco-warriors! From preschools to high schools and even some keen scout groups, students have been rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck into some serious environmental action.
Armed with spades, gloves, and big smiles, they’ve been out planting native trees, weeding pesky invaders like arum lilies and agapanthus, spreading mulch to protect young seedlings, checking trap lines, and even using tracking tunnels to see which critters are visiting their patch. Along the way, they’ve learned about what makes our local habitats so special, who lives there, and why looking after them really matters.
And it doesn’t stop at the school gate! Many students have become mini environmental ambassadors, sharing what they’ve learned with friends and family. We’ve heard brilliant stories of parents being gently “encouraged” to remove pest plants from their own gardens, or joining community planting and weeding days after being inspired by their tamariki.
Beyond the environmental wins, these projects are doing wonders for students’ well-being and confidence. Getting outside, moving, digging, and working as a team is great for mental health, physical fitness, and taking a well-earned break from screens. We’ve seen students who struggle to sit still in class absolutely thrive outdoors — focused, motivated, and proud of what they’re achieving.
There’s something special about seeing a young person light up when they realise they are making a real difference for the planet.
All up, our team has supported 22 schools and preschools this year, plus several scout and youth groups. That’s a whole lot of growing minds (and growing trees!) helping restore the beautiful Hibiscus and Bays area.
These hands-on projects don’t just make our reserves greener — they build teamwork, cooperation, and a lifelong love of nature. It’s amazing how a bit of dirt under the fingernails can lead to brighter moods, stronger friendships, and big changes for both people and the planet.
Ka pai to all our local schools and youth groups for their incredible mahi — you’re helping the environment, inspiring your communities, and proving that the future really is in good hands
