Long Bay Residents Join Forces with Restore Hibiscus and Bays to Create a Predator-Free Suburb

At Restore Hibiscus and Bays (RHB), we believe in the power of community to protect and restore our natural environment. That’s why we’re excited to partner with the Long Bay Residents Association (LBRA) to help transform Long Bay into a wildlife-friendly, predator-free suburb.

Long Bay is already home to a rich array of native birds, including oystercatchers, white-fronted terns, gulls, and dotterels that make Long Bay Regional Park their home. However, despite predator control efforts in the park, the surrounding suburb remains a hotspot for pests like rats, mice, and possums. These predators pose a serious threat to both the local wildlife and the homes of Long Bay residents, where they often invade gardens, sheds, and even roofs.

Building a Predator-Free Buffer Zone

Thanks to funding and the dedication of the Long Bay Residents Association, a subsidised backyard trap programme is bring rolled out to tackle this issue head-on. With our expertise and experience in local predator control, RHB is helping the community implement a simple but effective strategy: residents will be equipped with traps to help control the pest population right in their own backyards.

The goal is to create a buffer zone around Long Bay Regional Park, where the spread of pests is reduced, and the local birdlife can thrive without the constant threat of predation. This initiative will not only protect the wildlife within the park but will also benefit homeowners by reducing the number of pests in and around their properties.

How You Can Help

The key to this project’s success is community involvement. Once the programme is up and running, every Long Bay resident will play a crucial role in protecting both their homes and the surrounding environment. RHB is offering residents guidance, tools, and support to get started with trapping, and we encourage all homeowners to join in.

By participating in this programme, residents will be making a real impact in preserving the delicate ecosystems of the region. Even small actions, like setting a backyard trap, can contribute to a larger community effort that supports wildlife protection and fosters a healthier, safer environment for everyone.

A Shared Commitment to Conservation

At Restore Hibiscus and Bays, our mission is to help communities throughout the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board restore and protect local ecosystems. By partnering with the Long Bay Residents Association, we’re not only helping protect native species but also promoting a more sustainable, predator-free future for our entire region.

We’re excited to see Long Bay become a model for how suburban communities can work together to combat pests and protect our precious wildlife. If you live in Long Bay and want to get involved, reach out to the Long Bay Residents Association for more information on the trap programme. Together, we can create a thriving, predator-free community that will serve as a safe haven for our native birds and wildlife for years to come.
